Galveston Bay Buzz!

Hello Friends!

Welcome to Pre-Summer — also known as Fake Spring — where temperatures in Bay Area, Houston can change drastically in just a matter of minutes. I'm cold when I step into the coffee shop for a hot morning coffee, then sweating the second I walk back outside, wishing I'd ordered iced coffee instead. That brief moment of crisp morning air gets me every time this time of year. But honestly, I think these out-of-nowhere heat spells are just preparing us for the why-do-I-live-here summer waiting right around the corner.

I had a busy weekend and didn't have much time to explore, but I did make it to Kemah for dinner with a friend on the deck at Pizza King on Saturday night. I wish I had taken a picture of her face when she tasted the pepperoni pizza with a hot honey drizzle — it's amazing, and I can't eat pepperoni pizza without it now.

I ended my weekend Sunday evening with a bang, hauling out my pressure cookers to restock my canned pork carnitas. Ten hours in the kitchen later, I now have 28 fast dinners sitting on the shelf. They just need a few minutes in the oven to crisp the edges, and they are ready to melt in your mouth. I recently realized that cooking and canning have become one of my favorite hobbies. There's something about being in the kitchen that makes my stress just melt away — and the best part is having something to show for the hard work, something that brings a smile to my family's and friends' faces.

What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy that makes you happy? If you haven't found one yet, I encourage you to keep looking — and whatever it is, make time for it. We only get one shot at this life, so make the best of it.

League City Did It First.

Forgotten Gem.

The first cable water skiing in the United States was right here in League City in the 1970s at Waterski Paradise. It was unlike traditional water skiing because it ran off a cable system that allowed people to ski without a boat. In 1979 there were 25 cable skiing systems overseas — and only one in the United States, right here in League City.

The cable system setup was originally designed in Germany in the 1950s and could pull skiers between 18 and 36 mph around a lake. It made learning to water ski much easier because skiers started on top of the water rather than having to pull themselves up out of it.

Waterski Paradise, at its peak, attracted up to 500 visitors a day — and at $3 for 3 laps or $15 for an all-day pass, it's no wonder people kept coming back. It would've cost me $3 for an all-day pass because I don't think I could make more than 3 full laps in one day!

Did you live in League City in 1979 and remember Waterski Paradise? I would love to know more — send me a message! [email protected]
